This summer has surfaced some very unique trends and changes within the fashion world. It’s great to see society being more accepting and the encouragement of creativity. Going along with that theme, here are my top three obsessions for July:
1. Body Image
Over the past couple months, there has been much attention on the health of models. Their poor health choices not only affect the models, but also the girls who are being influenced by these images. Paris, arguably one of the biggest power houses in fashion, finally joining the movement by setting a standard that all working models must have at least a BMI of 18. Hopefully, the USA will see the positive outcomes of this and follow suit. I’m also obsessing over Aerie’s ad campaigns. They glorify the unique body shapes of every girl who shops at their store, not just stick thin models.
2. Hair Color
This trend has me reminiscing on beauty trends back from 2007, but I can definitely say it’s being done in a more tasteful manner this time around. Instead of chunky colored streaks, girls are finding more creative ways to express themselves through hair. One of my favorite ways this is being done is through the colored ombre. It’s creative a more fluid transition rather than harsh line between colors.
Statements necklaces are no doubt one of my favorite accessories, but it’s great to see a fresh trend coming into the mix. Variations of necklace length from extra long to dainty chokers are being used by girls to accessorize their outfits. I absolutely love the layered necklace trend, as well as the use of body chains, when done tastefully.
November is all about three things: traveling, sales, and every college student’s favorite: finals. This month has been a bit hectic to say the least. After experiencing my first November of college life, I’ve definitely learned some valuable lessons.
Traveling: No matter how insanely early your flight is, allow time for security. The line at Midway literally went all the way into the parking lot Sunday morning. This may be the one I was thankful for having to wake up before the crack of dawn so I could make my flight. Another important aspect of travel success is a good travel bag. My oversized tote was perfect, because it fit all my travel essentials (make up, chargers, magazines, etc.) and I could just put it on the security conveyor belt without having to worry about messing with one of the bins. Even though the flight was short, it was the perfect time for me to catch up on the latest issues of InStyle and Vogue before finals start to take over my life.
Sales: Every American seems to love a good Black Friday sale, as much as Thursday’s Thanksgiving meal. I waited in line at H&M to receive one of their scratch off cards. Being a “poor college student”, I used my birthday gift cards and scored a haul of a cardigan ($10), jumpsuit ($20), cape style sweater ($30), and statement necklace ($10). My best purchase was $70 ana booties from Carson’s for $20. And of course, today is my personal favorite day, Cyber Monday. Be sure to check sites for free shipping, percentages off, buy one, get one deals, etc. You’d be surprised how much better deals are out there than on Black Friday, and for half of the hassle. Check out stores like AKIRA for 30% off site wide.
Finals: I’m currently experiencing my first college finals, and you could say these next two weeks will definitely be the most stressful yet. Right now, my planner is my life line. My schedule would be in shambles without it. But most importantly, I need a consistent flow of coffee. There’s nothing like a shot of expresso at ten o’clock at night to power through your work. As important as studying is, so is de-stressing. A quick workout, power nap or online shopping break is the perfect way to take time for yourself and rejuvenate mental health.
October is the ultimate month of Fall; the leaves start to change, boots become an everyday staple, pumpkin spice lattes, etc. Call me basic, but October to December is the absolute best time of the year. The weather is finally mild enough where you can walk across campus with a hot chai in the morning without dying of heat, and I couldn’t be happier.
As you can probably tell, I’m a bit obsessed with boots. I style them into as many outfits as I can, whether it’s with a skirt or pair of jeans. Fall is perfect, because it’s an opportunity to wear them in a wide array of outfits and still be comfortable with the temperature. I can honestly say I’ve worn a pair nearly every day this month! When I was home a couple weeks ago, I traded in my old black riding boots for a pair of Cole Haan’s I scored at DSW for only $120 (origninal $330). I can assure you that they will be put to good use.
Another part of Fall fashion I adore is coats. My love of coats definitely comes from my mom. I’ve never seen someone be so excited over coat shopping, and I think that has rubbed off on me. During the Fall, often times my favorite part of my outfit is simply just my coat. Fall coats are absolutely perfect, because the weather is manageable enough that the coats are still fashionable and keep you warm without having to look like a giant marshmallow in a parka.
Lastly, I can finally wear dark nail polish without feeling out of place. I’ve always been drawn to dark colors and jewel tones over pastels and neons, whether it’s for clothing or nail polish. You’ll always see me wearing plums, maroons, and golds (with the except of pink, of course), but OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark will forever be the best nail color.
