Cheers to a New Year

Throughout all the chaos, I will admit that 2016 has been my favorite year yet. I’ve grown academically, professionally and truly as an individual.

This year, I’ll be saying goodbye to Chicago for a bit while taking on a new adventure in New York City; I have officially survived my first week as an “amateur New Yorker”. It’s both thrilling and nerve-racking coming face to face with the unknown, but the endless possibilities are more than welcome.

I’m finishing up my junior year at Kent State University’s NYC Studio. The NYC program is a unique opportunity to learn from industry professionals in the classroom as well as immerse yourself into the world of fashion as an intern. I’ll be spending my semester as a Public Relations intern at Karla Otto, an international luxury public relations firm. I’ll also be keeping a long distance relationship with A Magazine as the Social Media Director.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve only dreamt about working in the fashion industry and now, it’s actually becoming a reality. I can’t wait to share with you as I embark on life in the big apple through To The Nines.

XOXO, Kendall

Function of Beauty

I recently stumbled across the amazing hair care company, Function of Beauty. I could not be more impressed with their product. They understand the importance of individuality when it comes to hair care and all their products are free of harmful sulfates and GMOs. Function of Beauty allows customers to tailor their shampoo/conditioner set to their specific needs. Customers first create a profile, which includes hair type, hair structure and scalp moisture. You’re also able to choose “Hair Goals”. Depending on your choices, natural ingredients are added to your set to help you achieve those goals. The personalization goes even further to allow for customized fragrance and color. I can definitely say Function of Beauty has helped me reach those hair goals and leaves my hair smelling like beautiful white tea jasmine. Between humidity, chlorine, and sunlight, summer is a tough time for hair and Function of Beauty is here to help.

Guide to City Essentials

If I could choose one way to spend the day, it would be exploring a city. Whether it’s somewhere new or a place I’ve been to dozens of time, there’s always new adventures to be discovered. Arts, culture, and life lie around every corner. For a successful day, it’s crucial to bring along the a few essentials.

  1. Bring sunglasses. It may not even be THAT sunny, but with glares coming off of every passing car and building, you’ll be happy you had them.
  2. Download Uber and Transit. This gives you access to every possible form of transportation the city has to offer.
  3. Following the apps, make sure to pack a phone charger, so you can actually benefit from them.
  4. Your favorite lipstick. After a few cups of coffee, impulse macarons, and lunch, you’ll be ready to reapply.
  5. Satchel style purse. Whether you’re shopping or exploring a museum, worrying about your purse is the last thing you’ll want to be focusing on. This style allows for maximum movement and safety as it’s strapped around you.

Best Beauty Products of 2014

Finding the perfect beauty products never fails to come with a lot of trial and error. It always takes me multiple tries to find the product that is a perfect fit for me. After a year of ups and downs, here is my list of the must-have beauty products of 2014:

Lipstick: Anything from NYX

Anyone who knows me has probably noticed I’m obsessed with lipsticks. Ever since I discovered NYX, I just about own every color of the rainbow. They typically start at $3.99 and range to $5.99. NYX is inexpensive, but has a great variety of pigments and lasts nearly all day without reapplication.

Hair Mask: InstaNatural Argan Oil Hair Mask

This is a deep conditioning treatment that can also be used as a conditioner. It contains Argan Oil, Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, etc. After one use, I noticed a drastic difference in my hair. It makes it incredibly smooth and is great for dealing with frizzy hair. Over time, it strengthens hair and fights off heat damage.

Concealer: Benefit Boi-ing

For years, I religiously used Studio Gear concealer, but due to it being discontinued in stores, I’ve had to find another option. Benefit’s Boi-ing is an industrial strength concealer that is perfect for people with the curse of dark under eyes like myself. It has great coverage and is long lasting without drying out.

Foundation: Garnier Skin Renew BB Cream

I always use a BB Cream for every day, because it feels so much lighter on your skin while providing a decent amount of coverage. It’s long lasting, but it’s not as clogging to your pores as regular foundation. Some days I even mix it with my regular moisturizer to make it more like a tinted moisturizer.

Mascara: Rimmel London ScandalEyes Lycra Flex

I’ve tried multiple mascaras all from different price points, but this one has always stood out to me. The formula creates intense volume and length while the brush is made to define the lashes. If you’re looking for a new mascara, you definitely won’t be disappointed.

Method to the Madness: How to Shop Forever 21

F1 F2

As a Forever 21 employee, I completely understand how shopping here can seem overwhelming. Don’t let it scare you away! There are tons of diamonds in the rough to be found. Lucky for you, I’ll share my tips for mastering how to shop at Forever 21.

1.Carefully pick a day/time to shop!

This is one of the keys to shopping success at Forever 21. Certain times are much calmer than others making is much easier to find exactly what you’re looking for. For example, Saturday at 2 o’clock is bustling with shoppers and it’s harder for the employees to keep up with folds, go backs, lines at the register, etc. If you must shop on the weekends, I highly recommend going right as the doors open at ten o’clock. The folds are perfect and everything is in the correct place. Week days are also a great time to shop. The store tends to be slightly less busy and more shopper friendly.

2.Do your research

If you’ve never been on the Forever 21 website, take a look! They’re always promoting new arrivals, style deals, and the latest trends. If you’re not one who likes to dig through racks, save a picture and bring it into the store. Chances are a sales associate will know exactly where that item is and can save you major shopping time. Surprisingly, there is a method to the madness of Forever 21. The stores are split into specific shops, each of which caters to a different style. Sometimes they’re categorized by themes or celebrity inspiration making it easier to know exactly where one piece of clothing would be located within the store.

3. Don’t be afraid to dig

You’ll be surprised at the gems you can find if you take the time to go through all the racks. Although it can be tedious, they’re so are many hidden items you’ll be grateful you found. I’ve found great blazers, skirts, vests, etc. all for under $20 while digging through the sale rack. If you go at a time with less foot traffic, it’s not too hard of a task. Also, take a look for the visual racks. These are the items that have just been shipped in today. You’ll be able to grab the latest styles before everyone else and not have to worry about your size being out of stock!

4. Use one of the shopping bags

Most Forever 21 stores offer large mesh bags for customers to carry their merchandise around the store. Sometimes they’re located on a rack or ask one of the sales associates. They make digging through the racks and carrying all your style finds much more manageable! Another way to lighten your load is as asking a sales associate to start a fitting room for you. You can start storing items in the fitting room, so you’re not lugging around ten items of clothing with you while you’re looking through the accessories.

5. Know the exchange policy!

When one of the sales associates asks if you’re familiar with the exchange policy, always let them refresh your memory. You’d be surprised at how many people think they know the exchange policy then are surprised when a sales associate explains it to them. It’ll save you a lot of time and effort to know it is exchange/store credit only.

6.Read the labels

People often complain that Forever 21 clothing isn’t durable or high enough quality.    At the end of the day, take it for what it is. It’s extremely important to be familiar with the fabrics so you know how to best care for the item to make it last as long as possible. Many items are labeled as hand wash only. Another way to preserve your Forever 21 clothes are to use the gentle cycle setting, wash them inside out, or hang dry versus using the machine.
